Vibrant murals to be painted by Cincinnati youth | Arts & Culture
CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - Vibrant murals will be painted by youth as part of ArtWorks' 2012 Summer Program.
Mayor Mark Mallory and the non-profit organization ArtWorks announced the launch of the program which has hired 115 youth between the ages of 14 and 21 to make the city more vibrant.
"This program not only revitalizes neighborhoods with great pieces of public art, but it also puts our young people to work, teaching them how to work together and develop and implement large-scale projects," said Mayor Mallory. "I am confident that the ArtWorks Summer Program will leave a positive impact on our city for year."
Since the program first launched in 2007, the organization has hired youth to paint 46 murals in 28 Cincinnati neighborhoods and three nearby cities. The total will be brought up to 56 murals in 32 Cincinnati neighborhoods and five nearby cities after this summer.
"I am thrilled that the City continues to partner with ArtWorks on its summer youth employment program," said council member Yvette Simpson. "This program is a vital part of the youth employment initiative, and provides a unique opportunity for creative young people to explore using their artistic talent in the workplace."
ArtWorks has also hired 32 professional artists to serve as leaders and mentors to the young artists.
