WMKV celebrates Frank Sinatra's birthday

SPRINGDALE, OH (FOX19) - WMKV 89.3FM/ www.wmkvfm.org is celebrating the life and legacy of Frank Sinatra in an unprecedented 18-hour special Monday from 6am to Midnight.  December 12th is the anniversary of Sinatra’s birth in 1915.  The program is produced and hosted by Cincinnati broadcast legend Dusty Rhodes, who will examine three distinct periods in Sinatra’s illustrious career, the early years (6am to noon), the Capitol years (noon-6pm), and the years on Sinatra’s own Reprise Records label (6pm-midnight).

"My goal was to present the ultimate tribute to Frank Sinatra, the greatest American singer and entertainer of the 20th Century," says Rhodes, "Writing and producing this 18 hour special was something I have wanted to do for years.  Across seven decades his songs are like a mirror reflecting moments of our lives.”

Works of Venetian glass artist coming to Skirball Museum at HUC

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - An exciting new exhibition of Venetian glass creations and textiles by renowned artist Michael Gore will open at the Skirball Museum on Sunday, December 4, with a reception from 4 to 6 p.m. The artist will be present. This is the second major exhibit this year at the museum located on the Cincinnati campus of Hebrew Union College-Institute of Religion at 3101 Clifton Avenue in Clifton. 

The show demonstrates the school’s ongoing commitment to bringing a new dimension to the Cincinnati art world with exhibitions that celebrate Jewish art as well as other acclaimed works. The Gore exhibit will run through February. The museum will be open to the public every Sunday (except December 25 and January 1) through February 12 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - Country music star and multi-platinum selling artist Collin Raye will be putting on a Christmas concert in Cincinnati to benefit the Terri Schiavo Life & Hope Network.  Raye is the new spokesman for the group, hoping to shed light on their mission to help those families who have loved ones in similar situations like Terri Schiavo’s. 

The foundation was founded by members of the family of Terri Schiavo, a Florida woman who was considered to be in a permanent vegetative state after a medical episode, yet not in imminent danger of dying, whose life support was cut off by a court ruling after months off legal wrangling after a request that started with her husband.  The group fights that happening in similar cases. 

The concert will take place on Wednesday, December 7th.

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - Cincinnatians Harry Stoller, the half-brother of 1936 Olympian Sam Stoller, and Al Miller, who attended the 1936 Olympics, will speak at an interactive lecture event with author David Clay Large on why Marty Glickman and Sam Stoller—the only two Jews on the 1936 Olympic American track and field team who were in Berlin for the games—were pulled from the race at the last minute. 

Dr. Large, a history professor at Montana State University, is the author of "Nazi Games". 

The event will be held on Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at The Jacob Rader Marcus Center, 3101 Clifton Avenue, 45220. 

A special exhibit, “Nazi Olympics 1936” will open at the 4:30 p.m. reception, and will be on display for a limited time.  The lecture and discussion will follow at 5:30 p.m.

Festival of Lights opens to Zoo members Wednesday night

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - The Cincinnati Zoo is about to kick off tri-state’s longest running holiday tradition – the 29th Annual PNC Festival of Lights. The event kicks off with a special preview event on Wednesday as two million LED lights illuminate the Zoo. 

The Preview Night is only open to Zoo members, invited media and sponsors.  

The Preview Night features Cincinnati recording artist and TV host Nick Lachey, and Ciara Bravo of Nickelodeon’s “Big Time Rush”, at the annual tree-lighting ceremony.  There will also be puppet shows from the Madcap Puppets, and a light show on Swan Lake. 

The event opens to everybody on Friday, November 25.

FAIRFAX, OH (FOX19) - The Eisele Gallery of Fine Art has curated an exhibition and sale of original paintings by two of the most celebrated contemporary artists of our time, Wildlife Artist John A. Ruthven and Maritime Artist John Stobart. 

Ruthven, a Cincinnati native who now lives in Brown County, and Stobart will tell tales of their lives in a fascinating and informative lecture in the Mariemont Theater at 10 a.m. on Thursday December 8, 2011.

UC's College-Conservatory of Music Receives $1 Million Donation

CINCINNATI, (FOX19) - The University of Cincinnati's College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) Friday announced the receipt of a $1 million donation, bequeathed from the late Betty Jean (Seeger) Dannenfelser.  The gift - which came as a surprise to CCM faculty and staff - will be used to establish a student scholarship fund and enhance CCM faculty support. 

"The soon-to-be-established Betty J. Dannenfelser Memorial Scholarship will permit CCM to recruit many generations of the very best students and attract top-notch faculty, allowing CCM to maintain its international reputation as one of the world's leading conservatories," said Peter Landgren, Dean of CCM. "Through her generosity, she has made a lasting statement about the importance of the performing and media arts and their value to our community and beyond." 

Dannenfelser's gift is an extension of her longtime patronage of the local arts.
