Get a slice of Mardi Gras at the Main Library

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - As part of a festive Mardi Gras celebration, Ohio’s Largest King Cake will be constructed, iced, decorated, and then cut into slices and served to the public at the Main Library (8th and Vine streets) on Saturday, Feb. 2, from 1-4 p.m. Members of The Greater Cincinnati Retail Bakers Association will be constructing the massive 10-by-6-foot cake.

Some of the lucky attendees will randomly receive a “bubble gum coin” in their slice and win one of 500 Mardi Gras prizes, including teddy bears, beads, and paczkis. In addition, 12 grand prize King Cakes (donated from the participating area bakers) will also be given away at the event.

Public Library says ‘Huan Ying’ to teachers from China

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - The Public Library is extending a hearty huan ying, or “welcome,” to nine teachers participating in the 12th Teacher Exchange between Cincinnati and her sister city, Liuzhou, China.  

CULTURAL EVENTS

As part of the exchange program, the teachers will present special cultural programs to school groups showcasing a favorite place, story or sport. In the past, Chinese music, dances, games and other activities were featured during the presentations.  

The teachers also will give a cultural presentation at TeenSpot in the Main Library Jan. 23 at 3:30 p.m. Teens are invited to come and learn more about the Chinese culture.

Antique class for beginners in Sharonville

SHARONVILLE, OH (FOX19) - Ever go to a garage sale and wonder if what you are buying is worth something? If so, then Heritage Village has an opportunity for you.

Heritage Village Museum is conducting an antiques class for beginners starting on Saturday, February 23. The class is from 10am to 12pm and will introduce students to the world of antiques. Students will gain a basic knowledge of antique furniture, ceramics, glassware and more though hands on learning. Three classes are offered: February 23rd, March 9th and March 16th.

The cost of one class is $20.00 for museum members and $25.00 for non-members. If you wish to sign up for all three classes it is $50.00 for members and $65.00 for non-members. Presented by Dramakinetics, kids will have fun using drama to enjoy a good book. Registration is recommended for this free program for ages 12 and under with caregiver.

Cincinnati Zookeeper to share his Sumatran rhino adventures at Main Library

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - The Cincinnati Zoo has become well-known the world over for its rhino conservation program, especially the Sumatran rhinos.

So the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County is pleased to welcome Zookeeper Paul Reinhart to the Main Library Saturday, Jan. 26, at 2 p.m. in the Reading Garden Lounge. He’ll talk about the adventures and research that led up to the zoo achieving this recognition.

The Sumatran rhinoceros is one of the most endangered animals on earth, with fewer than 200 rhinos distributed throughout the fragmented rainforests of Southeast Asia. Thanks to scientific breakthroughs, however, the first Sumatran rhino calf bred and born in captivity in 112 years, Andalas, was born at the Cincinnati Zoo Sept. 13, 2001.

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County is offering children’s programs at selected branches to honor the life of Civil Rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Celebrate the life of Civil Rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. from 2 p.m.-4 p.m. at the Children’s Learning Center in the Main Library. Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati actor Deondra Kamau Means will perform “Martin’s Dream,” a one-man show that explores the real person behind the historic figure. Afterward, children can make a “stained glass” window craft using inspirational words.
