SHARONVILLE, OH (FOX19) - Miami-Jacobs Career College, Sharonville will host a safe, fun-filled, kid-friendly trick or treat Monster Bash on Tuesday, October 30 as an alternative to more traditional Halloween activities.

Beginning at Noon, Miami-Jacobs Career College Sharonville will be filled with fun opportunities for kids and adults alike from trick or treating to a radio remote and other engaging activities.

While on campus parents are invited to also take part in an interview preparation class, a resume writing workshop, and there will be refreshments.

Families invited to free afternoon fun at the Cincinnati Zoo

AVONDALE, OH (FOX19) - The YMCA of Greater Cincinnati, in cooperation with the Cincinnati Zoo and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, is holding a free Lights On Afterschool program at the zoo, from 3 p.m. until 5:30 p.m., on Thursday. 

“Hundreds of students, parents, educators, and community leaders attend the annual Lights On Afterschool celebration in Cincinnati to raise awareness about the importance of quality afterschool programming,” said YMCA of Greater Cincinnati President and Chief Executive Officer Sandy Walker.  “The Y is committed to providing a safe place for children, where caring adults can help educate, nurture, and transform them into leaders of tomorrow.”

Meet ‘Harriett’s Homecoming’ author, falcon during Main Library storytime

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - Get a bird’s-eye view of the Queen City when author Susan Sachs Levine reads from her book “Harriett’s Homecoming” at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, at the Main Library during storytime.

The book tells the story of a young peregrine falcon named Harriett who is rehabilitated and released from the top of the Carew Tower by a wildlife officer.  Listen to the story of Harriett as she searches for home and visits the many wonderful local sites, including the Cincinnati Museum Center, the Krohn Conservatory, Findlay Market, and even the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County’s famous “book fountain.”

Joining Ms. Levine will be a peregrine falcon and handler from the nonprofit organization Raptor Inc. The author will be signing books afterwards. The Friends of the Library Shop will be selling a limited number of books at the event.

Beech Acres Parenting Workshop Is On Managing Stress

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - Managing family, work and other obligations can be challenging for parents. At the October Beech Acres Parenting Center ‘For the Love of Kids’ workshop, parents will learn how to understand their stress triggers and their responses to those triggers, and strategies for managing that stress so as to focus on being mindful about enjoying their day and their relationships.

The workshop will be from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm on Monday, October 22 at the Beech Acres Anderson campus (6881 Beechmont Ave; Cincinnati, Ohio 45230) and on Tuesday, October 23 at the Beech Acres West campus (3325 Glenmore Ave; Cincinnati, Ohio 45211)

Cost is $15 and pre-registration is required at www.beechacres.org/workshops. The workshop is approved for 1 CEU for Ohio Social Workers and Counselors.

Free BLAST Health and Wellness Program Open House at YMCA

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - The Melrose YMCA invites the community to a free BLAST Health and Wellness Program open house, for those with developmental disabilities, on Wednesday, October 24, from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. at the Melrose YMCA, located at 2840 Melrose Avenue. 

“The BLAST program started in 2006 and works with adults with developmental disabilities to help them improve their lives through education, exercise, and engagement,” said BLAST volunteer Essie Pederson. During the open house, tours of the facility and light refreshments will be provided.  There will be opportunities to swim and take part in exercise classes offered through the BLAST program.

Glendale Beer Wine and Food Festival

GLENDALE, OH (FOX19) - The two-day Glendale Beer, Wine & Food Festival kicks off on Friday, October 12.

The festival is being held in historic Glendale Square on Friday, October 12 and Saturday, October 13. The festival features over 100 varieties of craft beer and wine, food from some of the most noted eateries in Cincinnati and live entertainment from bands Snidely Whiplash and Twistlock.

Proceeds of the event benefit The Cure Starts Now Foundation, one of the only cancer foundations dedicated to a “homerun cure” for all cancers, starting first with one of the most deadly and difficult cancers: pediatric brain cancer.

Beer and wine tasting admission tickets are $20 at the door and include a one-day admission to the festival, commemorative glass and five tasting tickets.

Festival hours are Friday, October 12 from 6-11pm and Saturday, October 13 from 2-11pm.
