Community Garden returns to Keystone Park

 

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - On Friday, April 20 Neyer Properties and community partners will be planting the Keystone Community Garden at Keystone Parke in Evanston.  Produce grown at the community garden will go be donated to the Over-the-Rhine (OTR) and Walnut Hills Kitchens and Pantry.

Around fifty volunteers will be working Friday morning to till and plant a 60- by 90-foot garden on vacant land located off Realistic Avenue in Evanston, between Neyer Properties’ Keystone Parke headquarters and the American Red Cross regional headquarters.  The garden is visible from I-71 south of the Dana Avenue exit ramp. Volunteers will be planting peppers, corn, potatoes, green beans, lettuce, cucumbers, and onions.  Volunteers planted their first garden on the property last year.

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - Just in time for the beginning of the growing season, a public town hall on urban farming and the local food economy will take place on Friday, April 6, 7-9 pm at the First Unitarian Church, 536 Linton Street in Avondale.   Leaders in building a new agricultural movement in Cincinnati will discuss sustainable and organic growing practices, community supported agriculture projects, school gardens, fresh food farm markets, local food restaurants, and the possibility of bringing a Food Hub to Cincinnati.

Presenters include Farmer Charles Griffin of the Enright Ecovillage; Deborah Jordan of the Central Ohio River Valley Food Guide; Kristen Barker of the Cincinnati Union Co-op Initiative; Sam Dunlap, School Garden Coordinator at the Civic Garden Center; and Leslie Stevenson of Gabriel’s Place Community Garden and Market Stand.

Hamilton County’s yard trimmings drop-off sites open Saturday, March 31

COLERAIN TOWNSHIP, OH (FOX19) - The Hamilton County Recycling and Solid Waste District’s free yard trimmings drop-off sites will open on Saturday, March 31.

This program is for Hamilton County residents only. Residents who drop-off yard trimmings must bring proof of residency, such as a driver’s license or utility bill. Landscapers and commercial establishments are NOT eligible to participate in this program.

East:  Bzak Landscaping, 3295 Turpin Lane (off Rt. 32) in Anderson Township
                (Also open Monday – Friday from 7:30 a.m. — 5 p.m. in addition to hours listed below)
West:  Kuliga Park, 6717 Bridgetown Road in Green Township
North:  Rumpke Sanitary Landfill, 3800 Struble Road (and Colerain Avenue) in Colerain Township

SHARONVILLE, Ohio, January 2012 – Over ten thousand people are expected to attend the 7th Annual Greater Cincinnati Remodeling Expo, Sponsored by RAM Trucks, which will bring hundreds of exhibitors to the Sharonville Convention Center on January 20-23, 2012.

The second, also at the church, is The Annual Holiday Party, with Live music with Lagniappe! 

VeganEarth says for each event, please bring a vegan dish of at least 8 servings, using vegetables, fruits, grains, beans, seeds, nuts (no animal derived ingredients: no dairy, eggs, casein, honey, etc.), to please list the ingredients with your dish, and bring your own compostable or reusable plates, cups, personal and serving utensils, and remember to take home everything you brought that is not compostable.

GLENDALE, OH (FOX19)  - The Glendale Fire Department is urging people to change their smoke detectors this weekend.  Here is a message they sent on the topic: 

Daylight savings is right around the corner.  When you turn back your clocks on Sunday November 6th, it is a good idea to change your smoke detector batteries.  Smoke detectors should be placed on every floor of the home, along with all bedrooms.  Smoke detectors can be purchased at any home improvement store for under than 20 dollars. 

People are two times more likely to survive a fire when a properly working smoke detector is installed.  Most residential fires occur at night, emphasizing the need for smoke detectors in the home.  For additional protection, carbon monoxide (CO) detectors can prove invaluable.  CO is dangerous because it is colorless and odorless.

Experts answer the age-old question, "What's digging up my lawn?"

WOODLAWN, OH (FOX19) - Wildlife experts at the Cotswold Visitor Center at Glenwood Gardens will answer questions about creatures that tear up your turf from below, as well as other offbeat wildlife questions, on October 22.

This is the time of year for things to start happening in the lawn, since some wildlife heads underground as the first hard freeze approaches.

If you can get a photo of lawn damage or diggings, bring it along so the experts can take a look.

This program for adults is 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 22nd.  Glenwood Gardens is at the west end of Glendale Milford Road at Springfield Pike.  It shares part of its outer entrance driveway with a shopping center next door.
