Norwood man named Ohio Big Brother of the Year

NORWOOD, OH (FOX19) - A Norwood man has been named Ohio's Big Brother of the Year.

John Hanley says the reason his decided to become a Big Brother, a volunteer mentor, is simple: ”Because of the strong family background I have,” John says, “I always wanted to give back to young men who were not blessed with the family structure I was brought up in.”

Hanley has worked with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Cincinnati since 2001, serving as a mentor to two young men and sharing the message that “Mentoring Changes Lives” with many adults. In addition to his 11 years as a mentor through BBBS of Greater Cincinnati, Hanley was matched with another child when he lived in Columbus.

Education professor named Xavier Teacher of the Year

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19)  - Thomas Knestrict, associate professor of education at Xavier University, has been named the Bishop Fenwick Teacher of the Year by the Xavier chapter of Alpha Sigma Nu, the Jesuit honor society.

A resident of Mason, Knestrict has taught at Xavier since 2004. He received an EdD in special education from the University of Cincinnati and a BS in special education from Kent State University. He is well-known for his Remarkable Families Symposium, which presents the opportunity for families raising children with special needs to access resources, learn of new opportunities and to network with other families in order to “not only survive but to thrive.

Xavier University's Sister Rose Ann Fleming being honored

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - Sister Rose Ann Fleming, athletic academic advisor at Xavier University, will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Cincinnati Sports Professionals Network 2013 awards dinner on Wednesday, May 8.

Since she became Xavier’s academic adviser in 1985, Fleming has helped graduate every men’s basketball player who has reached his final year of athletic eligibility. In 1991, then-coach Pete Gillen named her the men’s basketball team’s first-ever Most Valuable Player. In 2000, she was inducted into Xavier’s athletic hall of fame. "I try to make sure each student feels he or she is a special individual," she said.

Fleming came to Xavier in 1982 after serving as the president of Trinity College in Washington. She joined the Xavier faculty so she could also work toward an MBA and a law degree. She also has a PhD in educational administration from Miami University, which helped her in her counseling role.

Asst. Principal put on leave for supporting gay marriage

EAST WALNUT HILLS, OH (FOX19) -The assistant principle at an East Walnut Hills Catholic high school claims he is poised to lose his job for supporting gay marriage.

Mike Moroski, the assistant principal at Purcell Marian High School, says that he was placed on leave with a pending termination for expressing support of gay marriage on his personal web page.

Moroski says that the Archdiocese of Cincinnati gave him an ultimatum- resign, or keep his job at Purcell Marian until June by signing a document recanting statements made on his personal blog.

The blog post,entitled "Choosing Your Battles", was written on January 27.

"I unabashedly believe that gay people SHOULD be allow to marry," wrote Moroski in his blog. "Ethically, morally and legally I believe this."

Long-term care leader to advance Senior Independence offices

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - A leader in long-term care is directing regional offices for one of Ohio's premier providers of home and community based services.

Cheryl Withrow recently accepted an executive director position at Senior Independence.

She manages the day-to-day operations of the Southwest Ohio and Miami Valley offices, which cover the home health care and hospice needs in 14 Ohio counties, including several retirement villages and adult day centers and one senior center.

Withrow, who has a 29-year career in the industry, is a licensed nursing home administrator and has a Master of health care administration.

"Cheryl's background in health care is driven by her passion to do what's right for the patient," says Senior Independence President Peggy Bertels.

NORWOOD, OH (FOX19) - The Christ Hospital Physicians announced this week that Christine Kneer-Aronoff, MD, gynecologist, has joined its network of employed physicians. 

Dr. Kneer-Aronoff is board certified in Obstetrics & Gynecology. She completed her residency at the University of South Florida College of Medicine, where she also received her medical degree. She also holds a Bachelor of Science in Engineering

Dr. Kneer-Aronoff is relocating to Cincinnati, her hometown, after practicing in Lubbock, Texas for the past 12 years. Dr. Kneer-Aronoff will see patients at 4803 Montgomery Road, Suite 120 in Norwood. She is accepting new patients and can be reached at 513.564.6644.

Dr. Kneer-Aronoff was previously Assistant Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology at the University of Cincinnati and has been recognized in the “Guide to America’s Top Obstetricians and Gynecologists.”
