Underwood Chooses Villanova

Underwood Chooses Villanova

Even as he’s preparing for his own upcoming freshman year at Villanova University in Pennsylvania, Winton Woods High School senior Gary Underwood has some advice for students who will be attending the high school for the first time next fall. “Surround yourself with the right group of people,” Underwood said. “Don’t slack off your freshman year, because you don’t want to hear the counselor say you’re not going to graduate.”

Underwood himself is graduating with a full scholarship to play football at Villanova University next year and plans to pursue a liberal arts degree with the possibility of studying sports management. In addition to his own hard work, it was the encouragement of his coaches, Andre Parker and Calvin Johnson, that has helped prepare him for college life. “They motivated me and talked about what I had to do to be great,” said Underwood.

Simple Service Saturday helps local residents

Simple Service Saturday helps local residents

Over 70 volunteers came together on Simple Service Saturday, a community service outreach partnership between Winton Woods City Schools and Messiah Lutheran Church, to serve senior citizens living in Greenhills and its surrounding communities. “April 28 started out to be a rainy day, but we were able to finish all our tasks,” said June Tessin of Messiah Lutheran.

Students from the Academy of Global Studies @ Winton Woods High School, WWHS Key Club members, and volunteers from Messiah Lutheran helped nine residents with yard work that included cleaning out flower beds, mulching, and planting flowers. “The day was a huge success, and we plan on helping our residents again in the fall,” said Tessin.

Winton Woods High School to Have New Start Time for 2012-2013

The elimination of high school busing has changed the start time at Winton Woods High School for the 2012-2013 school year to 8:00 a.m., with the day ending at 3:07 p.m. Bells will be 49 minutes long with five minutes to pass between classes. Teachers’ days will run from 7:55 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.

The district will also introduce zero bell to the high school. Zero bell will run from 7:10 to 7:59 a.m. and is a requirement for students in the Academy of Global Studies (AGS).  “The required seminar class for our AGS students meant those students stayed an extra bell at the end of the day this year,” said Principal Terri Holden. “That class has been moved to the beginning of the day and allows all our students to be released at the same time.”
