Sudden cardiac arrest can affect anyone. The person loses consciousness, collapses, stops breathing, and the heart stops. With no circulation, there is no flow of oxygenated blood to the brain, and brain cells begin to die.

Without immediate CPR, the person’s survival chances drop 7 percent to 10 percent per minute. Most sudden cardiac arrests occur at home, so rescuers are often family and friends.
