Cincinnati State nominates two for All-USA Academic Team

Cincinnati State nominates two for All-USA Academic Team

CINCINNATI,OH (FOX19)- Cincinnati State Technical and Community College has nominated two students, Joshua Monroe and Shieh Yen Chong, for the 2011 All-USA Academic Team competition.

Neither fits the description of a traditional student, even by community college standards.

  • Monroe, a Springfield Township resident, is pursuing an Associate of Science degree and ultimately plans to pursue a PhD in chemical engineering.

Monroe came to Cincinnati State after time in the workforce that included a three-year run as manager of the suburban tire store where he’d begun as an entry-level employee.  By taking a voluntary demotion to tire changer, he was able to cut his work hours to 20 a week and attend Cincinnati State full-time.

Join the Norwood Middle School "Birthday Book Club"

Join the Norwood Middle School "Birthday Book Club"

NORWOOD, OH (Contributed by Norwood City Schools) - The Norwood Middle School Library has been fortunate to receive a grant from the Norwood Alumni Association that will help with our New "Birthday Book Club". The purpose of the Birthday Club is to promote reading with our 7th and 8th graders since these will be the books that the students have picked to go into our school library, as well as increasing our library collection. With a zero budget this year for books we are trying to find ways to put new books in our school library.

Hopefully the birthday book club will do just that. Your child can donate a book at anytime throughout the year and for their donation, your child's name will be entered into a drawing in May for one of several nice gifts. There is also another way in which a student can have a book donated, if they meet the financial requirement and obligations to do so.

Kasich will visit Cincinnati State Technical and Community College and visit with college administrators and local business leaders whose companies benefit from the College's programs and graduates. He will also talk about the local economy.

Over on the University of Cincinnati campus, the student government has collected about 2,000 signatures urging Kasich to reconsider funding cuts for higher education. They will collect signatures the rest of the month and send the petition after the new year.

Kasich's first budget isn't due until March, but there are reports that public universities could lose as much as 20 percent in funding.

Kasich defeated current Governor Ted Strickland in the November election.

Schools may see more delays and less school days this winter

Schools may see more delays and less school days this winter

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -  Fewer snow days are available to Ohio schools this year, so delays could be a trend this winter.

State budget cuts have limited the number of snow days schools can take this year from five to three. Area superintendents say the number doesn't matter - it's all about safety.

"It's the whole idea of making sure our kids are safe," said Forest Hills superintendent Dallas Jackson. "A two hour delay is just that. It gives the school system an opportunity to either make sure the road conditions have improved or the weather has improved so that we can safely put our busses on the street."

In Norwood, buses aren't used for students. The majority of kids live in within walking distance.

"We don't even have a lot of students that drive, so a lot of our students walk, so what I have to be concerned about is our students walking," said Norwood superintendent Rob Amodio.
