Cincinnati Zoo to dedicate nation's largest public solar array

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - Cincinnati Zoo Executive Director Thane Maynard will be joined by U.S. Senator Rob Portman as the zoo dedicates the largest publicly accessible solar array in the United States on Monday.

The 64-hundred panel array, installed above the Zoo's Vine Street parking lot, is capable of cranking out 1.56 million watts of power, providing 20 per cent of the Zoo's needs and on sunny days pumping electricity back to the power grid.

The Zoo partnered with designer, developer, owner and operator Melink Corporation to create the array, with support from other companies and organizations as well as the government.

Besides creating power, the panels have the side effect of creating shade for the Vine Street lot.
