Cincinnati's purring penguin big hit on YouTube

CINCINNATI (AP) - A penguin that makes a laughing sound when its belly is rubbed at the Cincinnati Zoo has become one of the latest YouTube video stars.

The Little Penguin named Cookie can be seen on the video making a high-pitched purring sound when his handler tickles him.

The website says the video was posted in January 2010 and has been watched more than 1,900,000 times. Zoo spokesman David Oehler says Cookie hatched at the zoo about 8 years ago and that the noises are part of normal courting behavior.

He says the video was made more than a year ago by a volunteer doing a blog. Oehler says Little Penguins are about a foot tall and are from the coasts of New Zealand and Australia.

Ides actors Gosling and Wood enjoy the Zoo

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - A pair of actors from The Ides of March" took advantage of an off-day a few days ago to visit the Cincinnati Zoo.

The Zoo's Chad Yelton says they sent out a tweet when the film started production here a few weeks ago, inviting cast members to a behind-the-scenes tour.

He doesn't know whether anyone with the film took note of it, but a couple weeks later the Zoo got a call from Evan Rachel Wood's assistance expressing interest.  By the time the day arrived, Ryan Gosling and his assistant joined the entourage.

Among the highlights of the tour:

The group met Schottzie the elephant, and other Indian elephants.

  • Gosling and Wood were examined by a sloth named Moe.
  • Wood helped train a bird form the bird show.
  • Gosling hand-fed a female Indian Rhinoceros.
  • Wood was ignored by a mountain lion cub.
  • Gosling made (and later posted) a cell-phone movie of a penguin.
